Major Algarve Towns
Each Algarve town has a different personality. Where you base your trip changes the experience as much as which activities you do.
Lagos
Region: west algarve · 32k pop.
Cliff-coast capital — Ponta da Piedade, marina, historic centre
The Algarve town that does everything well — cliffs, beaches, marina, history, nightlife, dining. Best base for first-timers.
Albufeira
Region: central algarve · 40k pop.
Resort-tourism heartland — Old Town + Strip
Most-touristed town in Algarve. Marmite — package-holiday lovers love it, independent travellers avoid the Strip. Old Town has charm.
Faro
Region: east algarve · 64k pop.
Regional capital + airport gateway + Ria Formosa launchpad
Underrated — most tourists transit through and miss the city. Walled old town, university energy, working harbour. Best non-resort base for East Algarve.
Tavira
Region: east algarve · 15k pop.
Moorish whitewashed jewel — Roman bridge + churches + barrier-island beach
Often called "the most beautiful town in Algarve". Quieter than Lagos, lower density than Albufeira, easier on the eyes than Faro.
Sagres
Region: west algarve · 2k pop.
Surf town at the edge of Europe — fortaleza + Cabo + raw Atlantic coast
Last "real" outpost in the Algarve before the ocean. Counter-cultural to the resort centre. Best base for wild-coast adventures.
Carvoeiro
Region: central algarve · 3k pop.
Postcard cliff town — Algar Seco rock formations + boardwalk
The pretty one. Closest base to Benagil cave. Quieter than Lagos but more touristed than Tavira.
Portimão
Region: central algarve · 60k pop.
Working port + Praia da Rocha resort beach
Function-over-form. Has the working fishing port (best sardines), Praia da Rocha (resort beach), and boat-tour departure marina.
