Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best Algarve town for first-time visitors?

Lagos. It covers the most ground for a first trip — cliff coast (Ponta da Piedade), historic centre, beaches, marina, dining, walkable nightlife. Easy day trips into Central Algarve (Benagil) and reachable to West (Sagres). Better mix than Albufeira (more package-tourism) or Tavira (more niche cultural). If your priority is specifically Benagil, Carvoeiro is the closest base. If your priority is surf, Sagres. Take the town picker quiz for matching by group + priority + pace.

When is the best time to visit the Algarve?

May-June and September-October are sweet spots for most travellers — comfortable temperatures (20-26°C), low-medium crowds, accommodation 20-30% cheaper than peak. July-August is hot (26-32°C), busy, and expensive but has the warmest sea (22-23°C). November-April is quietest with off-peak rates but some operators close. See the full month-by-month guide.

How do I actually visit Benagil cave?

Five ways: speedboat tour (€20-€30, 5-10 min inside, fastest), kayak tour (€35-€55, 15-25 min inside, sweet spot for time + ease), SUP tour (€35-€55, similar to kayak but more weather-dependent), DIY rental kayak/SUP from Benagil beach (€15-€25/hr, cheapest + most flexible), or guided swim tour (rare, summer only). You can NO LONGER swim into the cave alone from Benagil beach — that was banned in 2023 after years of accidents. Read the Benagil cave options guide for the full breakdown.

East, Central, or West Algarve — which region?

Depends on your priority. West (Sagres/Lagos) for wild Atlantic + surf + dramatic cliffs. Central (Carvoeiro/Albufeira) for Benagil cave + big resort beaches + biggest nightlife. East (Faro/Tavira) for Ria Formosa lagoon + traditional Algarve + cultural depth. If you can only pick one region for a first-time trip, West Algarve (Lagos as base) gives the most variety. See the East vs Central vs West guide.

How much should I budget per day?

Budget travellers €60-€90 per person/day (hostel/shared apartment, 1 paid activity, simple meals). Mid-range €100-€180 (3-star hotel, 1-2 activities, dinner out). Comfortable €200-€300 (4-star hotel, multiple activities, premium dining). Family of 4 mid-range ~€350-€500 per day. Add ~30-50% for July-August peak season. Activities themselves run €20-€85 per adult depending on type.

Do I need a rental car?

Yes for multi-region trips. The Algarve is ~150km tip-to-tip and public transport along the coast is functional but slow. With a car: easy two-base trips (West + East), inland Monchique, late-evening returns. Without a car: pick one base (Lagos, Albufeira, Tavira) and stay there, day-trip via tour operators or local buses. From Faro airport: 30 min to Faro/Tavira, 60 min to Lagos, 90 min to Sagres.

Is the Algarve good for families with young kids?

Excellent. Family-friendly resort infrastructure is concentrated in Albufeira, Vilamoura, and Lagos. Gentle bay beaches (Praia da Luz, Praia da Marinha, Camilo) work well for kids. Slide & Splash water park (Lagoa) is the major family attraction. Boat tours over kayak/SUP for under-7s. Avoid Ria Formosa solar boats for very small kids (long, quiet, requires patience). Sagres surf-coast is too windy + wave-y for small children.

What about couples / honeymoons?

Tavira (East) for slow-pace cultural couples — Moorish architecture, quiet dining, romantic. Carvoeiro (Central) for postcard-pretty + Benagil access. Sagres (West) for adventurous couples wanting wildness + sunset at Cabo São Vicente. Avoid Albufeira's Strip area (party central, not romantic). Best dining concentration: Lagos historic centre + Tavira old town + Carvoeiro cliff-top restaurants.

Can I surf as a beginner in the Algarve?

Yes — Sagres is one of Europe's best beginner surf coasts. Cordoama, Beliche, and Amado are the typical beginner-friendly spots in summer (smaller waves). Sagres Natura, Algarve Surf, and other ISA-certified schools run lessons (€40-€60/2hr, all gear included) and week-long camps. Best beginner months: April-October. Winter is for experienced surfers (bigger swell, colder water, 4/3mm wetsuit needed).

Are dolphin tours guaranteed to see dolphins?

Most reputable operators advertise 85-95% sighting rates. Common dolphins are year-round residents along the south coast; bottlenose are frequent. Sperm whales + striped dolphins are seasonal. Operators with marine biologist on board (e.g. Lagos and Faro-based ones) do better species ID and follow distance regulations. Mornings are slightly higher success than afternoons. If you don't see anything, several operators offer free re-sail.

Is the Algarve good for solo travellers?

Yes — easy infrastructure, English widely spoken in tourist areas, safe, walkable historic centres in Lagos and Tavira. Group activities (boat tours, kayak, surf lessons) are natural meeting points. Sagres has a backpacker/surfer community. Lagos has the most solo-friendly nightlife. Tavira and Sagres for solo travellers wanting quieter pace. Solo female travellers report Algarve as one of Europe's safest destinations.

Should I book activities in advance?

July-August: yes, 5+ days ahead for popular tours (Benagil cave kayak, Lagos boat tours, dolphin tours). May-June + September-October: 2-3 days ahead is plenty. Off-peak: same-day usually fine. Book direct on operator website (€5-€10 cheaper) or via GetYourGuide/Viator (more flexible cancellation). For surf lessons + multi-day camps, 2+ weeks ahead in summer.

I'm on a cruise — can I do an Algarve activity?

Limited but yes. Cruise ships dock in Portimão (most common) or Lisbon (longer transfer). Speedboat Benagil cave tours from Portimão fit a 6-8 hour port day comfortably. Kayak tours are tighter — possible but watch the timing. Skip: Sagres (90 min drive each way), full-day jeep safaris, surf lessons. Family-friendly speedboat with cave tour is the safest cruise-day pick.

What about food + wine?

Cataplana (seafood stew in copper pot) is the iconic Algarve dish. Sardines best in Portimão. Octopus salad widely available. Inland: cabrito (kid goat) in Monchique. Wine: Algarve has small but rising wine scene (mainly around Lagoa + Borba — try Quinta dos Vales). Medronho is the local fruit brandy, distilled in Monchique. Food tours are still an underdeveloped category here; book through operators rather than expecting many off-the-shelf options.

Are tips expected on tours?

Not mandatory but appreciated. €5-€10 per person on a 2-3 hour group tour is standard. €10-€20 per person on a full-day private. Cash in euros. Less expected on speedboat group tours (faster, less guide interaction); more expected on kayak + SUP tours (active guiding) and food/wine tours (curation effort).
