How to Visit Benagil Cave
Benagil cave is the single most-photographed Algarve attraction — sea cave with a circular skylight, sandy floor, accessible only by water. Five ways to do it, all with tradeoffs. Below: which one fits.

Important rule (since 2023)
You can NO LONGER swim into the cave from Benagil beach. Authorities banned beach-swim access in 2023 after years of accidents. Cave entry is now legal ONLY from the water (boat, kayak, SUP, or guided swim from licensed operator). Anyone telling you to swim in alone from the beach is giving outdated advice.
Option 1 — Speedboat tour (most common)
- Price: €20-€30 per adult (group), €120-€300 for private (4-passenger)
- Duration: 1.5-2 hours total
- Time inside cave: 5-10 minutes (boat hovers, doesn't land)
- Departure: Portimão, Albufeira, Lagos, Carvoeiro, Armação de Pêra marinas
- Best for: first-timers, time-limited cruise passengers, families with very young kids
Reality: in peak season (Jul-Aug) there are 30+ boats lined up to enter Benagil at any given time. You get 2-3 minutes inside, photo, out. Other coastal stops (other caves, beaches from sea) usually fill the rest of the trip.
Option 2 — Kayak tour
- Price: €35-€55 per person
- Duration: 2.5-3 hours total
- Time inside cave: 15-25 minutes — you actually land on the sand
- Departure: Benagil beach (closest), Portimão, Albufeira
- Best for: active travellers, couples, photographers wanting more time inside, anyone who wants the iconic "person standing on cave sand" shot
Reality: kayak is the sweet spot — meaningfully more time inside than a boat, less weather-restricted than SUP, accessible to most fitness levels (guides will help). Book early in peak season; departures cap at 8-12 kayaks per group.
Option 3 — SUP (stand-up paddle) tour
- Price: €35-€55 per person
- Duration: 2.5-3 hours total
- Time inside cave: 15-20 minutes
- Skill needed: light — guides handle most beginners, but small-chop days are more demanding
Reality: SUP is photographically the most "wow" option — you're standing as you enter the cave. But it's the most weather-dependent (any chop makes it harder), and on busy days you compete with boats + kayaks for cave floor space. Best in Jun + Sep on calm mornings.
Option 4 — DIY rental kayak/SUP from Benagil beach
- Price: €15-€25/hour (single) or €25-€40/hour (double)
- Duration: 1-3 hours
- Best for: kayak/SUP-experienced visitors, flexible-schedule travellers
Reality: cheapest option. You set your own pace, pick the timing (early morning is golden — light is best, crowds are minimal). The downside: no guide, you self-assess weather + sea state. Operators won't rent you a kayak in conditions they judge unsafe — trust their judgement.
Option 5 — Guided swim tour (rare but exists)
- Price: €40-€60 per person
- Duration: 2 hours
- Best for: strong swimmers, summer-only, certified-guide context
Reality: a small number of operators run guided swim tours (with safety gear, proper risk briefing, and the cave entered legally from a support boat anchored offshore). Niche; not advertised heavily. Ask at Benagil beach when you arrive.
Decision tree
- Time-limited (cruise port-day): speedboat from Portimão or Albufeira
- Family with young kids: speedboat (kayak too physical for under-7s)
- Couple wanting the iconic photo: kayak — best mix of time inside + ease
- Photographers chasing the cleanest shot: DIY kayak from Benagil beach at 7am, calm-day morning
- Active travellers, fitness OK: SUP for the standing-up wow shot
Best timing
- Best months: May, Jun, Sep, Oct (calm, warm, fewer crowds)
- Worst months: Jul-Aug (peak crowds + boat queues)
- Best time of day: 7:30-9am for calm sea + soft light. Mid-morning (10am-12pm) for the skylight aligned vertically with the sand floor.
- Worst time of day: 12pm-3pm peak crowd — 30+ boats queuing
- Booking lead time: 5+ days ahead Jul-Aug; same-day fine in shoulder months
